Killeen was named after the railway's assistant general manager, Frank P. Killeen. The town remained a small farming and trade center until the demands of World War II required the opening of a military base camp in the early 1940s, later re-commissioned as Fort Hood in 1950. The military brought growth, an economic change from agriculture to military, a few recessions after the end of the war, and then massive growth again.
